Abstract
Background : Hypercholesterolemia is a major factor of coronary heart disease. Carrot is a vegetable which is contain high beta carotene that can decrease low density lipoprotein (LDL) and increase high density lipoprotein (HDL) level. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of carrot juice for preventing hypercholesterolemia.
Methods : An in vivo experimental design of 25 rats which were divided into 5 groups : group of normal diet (KN), high fat diet (KP), high fat diet with low dose fresh carrot juice (107,7 µg beta carotene) (P1), high fat diet with moderate dose fresh carrot juice (397,7 µg beta carotene) (P2), and high fat diet with high dose fresh carrot juice (894,8 µg beta carotene) (P3). After 35 days of intervention, the blood samples were collected from each rat’s tail around 3 mL. The levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride were analyzed by place the blood on the cholesterol and triglyceride strips. The lipid peroxidation was analyzed using the blood plasma which measured by spectrophotometer with TBARS methods.
Results : Fresh carrot juice can affect the levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, and lipid peroxidation (p < 0,05). There is no significant difference between the dosage with the levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride. The best dosage to inhibit the increasing of lipid peroxidation was the high dose.
Conclusion : Fresh carrot juice can inhibit the increasing of total cholesterol, triglyceride, and lipid peroxidation of Wistar rats with high fat diet. The best dosage to inhibit the increasing of lipid peroxidation is the high dose
