Abstract
Background. Imbalance of oxidant and antioxidant compounds cause the formation of oxidative stress. Citrus sp. is one source of antioxidants which can reduce the effects of oxidative stress. Several previous studies have claimed that the antioxidant compounds not only found in citrus pulp, but also in the peels. Objectives. The aim of this study is to obtain information about antioxidant potential comparison from the ethanol extract of Sunkist and Mandarin oranges peels. Methods. The study was an experimental in vitro research. The study used two types of orange peels, Sunkist and Mandarin. Extraction was done by maceration for 5 days. Antioxidant potential was measured using DPPH test. Antioxidant capacities were seen from the percentage value of FRSA (Free Radical Scavenging Activity). Data was analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test and further analyzed with Post-hoc Mann-Whitney. Results. The Shapiro-Wilk data normality test showed p value < 0.05. Kruskal-Wallis analysis showed p value < 0.05. It showed significant differences in comparison of sample from Sunkist and Mandarin oranges. Post-hoc Mann-Whitney analysis showed p value = 0.05 on comparison between groups of same samples with different concentrations of solvents. In addition, Post-hoc Mann-Whitney analysis showed p value > 0.05 on comparison between groups of different samples with the same solvent concentration. Conclusions. Ethanol extract of Sunkist and Mandarin oranges peels have antioxidant activity. No significant differences in antioxidant potential between both citrus skins extract in the same solvent concentration.
