Abstract
Background. The use of cigarette among adolescents are increasing over the years, it’s become one of a major public health concern in the world including Indonesia. The number of adolescents smoker in Indonesia continues to increase every year, from 34.2% in 2007 to 36.3% in 2013. In Moluccas, the number of adolescents smoker are also increasing. Many factors are implicated in the continuous rising trend of cigarette smoking among adolescents. Smoking also has the negative impact. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of smoking on the student’s performance in government senior high school 1 Saumlaki, District of Southwest Moluccas.
Methodology. This cross sectional study using systematic random sampling conducted on students in government senior high school Saumlaki, Moluccas, Indonesia. There are 192 respondents (14-19 year old) from 10-12th grade to observed.
Results. The study showed that 34.4% respondent had smoking behavior and 65.6% did not have smoking behavior. There was significant correlation between sex and smoking behavior (p<0.05). There was no significant correlation between age and smoking behavior (p>0.05). There was significant correlation between smoking behavior and student’s performance (p<0.05), student who smoked had the low student’s performance instead of the others in school. There was significant correlation between smoking behavior and student’s performance in the last semester compared to this semester (p<0.05).
Conclusions. There is an impact of smoking behavior that influence student’s performance in government senior high school Saumlaki. Adolescents need prevention such as education to avoid from smoking behavior as well as to reduce the number of cigarette smoking among adolescents.
