Abstract
Candida tropicalis is identified as a non-albicans candida species that is most commonly observed as pathogenic fungi. Owing to its high resistance to antifungal substances, a considerable number of studies have been performed in search of antifungals that are effective on C. tropicalis. One such study is the use of fluid from the pitcher plant Nepenthes rafflesiana. Chitinase, naphthoquinones, plumbagin, droserone and 5-O-methyldroserone are known antifungal substances found in pitcher fluid from N. rafflesiana. Research is conducted in order to determine the antifungal capabilities of fluid from N. rafflesiana, originating from closed and open pitchers, on C. tropicalis growth. This study utilizes disc diffusion and macrodilution with concentrations of 20%, 35%, and 50%. The disc diffusion method gives no significant difference in inhibition zones between N. rafflesiana fluid from open and closed pitchers on C. tropicalis growth. The macrodilution method gives no significant difference in growth of fungal colonies from both open and closed pitchers in concentrations of 20%, 35% and 50%. Research and processing of data show antifungal substances present in N.rafflesiana fluid from open and closed pitchers are not effective in inhibiting C. tropicalis growth.
