Abstract
Background: Cataract is the main cause of blindness in the world especially in elderly (senile cataract). The same thing is experienced in Southeast Asia, where Indonesia has the highest number of blindness with 3.5 million cases. East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has second rank after Gorontalo in terms of the high prevalence of blindness in Indonesia. This situation is concern so the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the global commitment to vision 2020: “The Right To Sight" to optimize the vision with various ways including surgery. This commitment needs to be supported and reviewed to achieve success in lowering the number of blindness.
Objective: to know the demographic factors that risk against senile cataract, and knowing achievement of global commitment vision 2020 by looking at the success of senile cataract surgery and blindness reduction rate.
Method: the study using the method of cross-sectional analytic descriptive. The sample amounted to 173 people. Data sourced from medical record of senile cataract patient which had undergone surgery and post-operative routine control at Marianum Catholic Hospital, period of 2011-2015. Assessment is carried out by looking at the change of visual acuity after the surgery and pay attention to the complications that occur and the use of LIO.
Results and conclusions: Senile cataracts affected by; age, gender, education, and employment. Visual acuity after surgery has changed for the better. There is a difference between the visual acuity before surgery with visual acuity after surgery (p=0.000). Improvement of visual acuity in senile cataract surgery has complied with three of the four citeria from WHO with blindness reduction rate reached 95.3%.
Suggestion: patients are expected to regularly control the eyes and follow the advice by physicians in treating the eye after surgery. The hospital is expected to use a method of operation that does not cause a lot of complications so that successful operation can be increased.
