Abstract
Background. Nowadays food processing becomes more advance leading children to
consume excessively. This matter in turn lead to the higher of weight and BMI higher
than normal. In adulthood, the incidence of obesity linked to hypercholesterolemia.
Previous studies have concluded that BMI is not associated with plasma cholesterol
level in adolescent age 12-14. This study show the correlation of BMI and plasma
cholesterol level in children age 9-14 years. The aim of the research is to determine the
correlation of body mass index (BMI) to plasma cholesterol level in children age 9-
14 years.
Method. Respondents were students from Santa Ursula Bumi Serpong Damai
primary and junior high school. Respondents were selected by random sampling.
BMI was measured from body weight and body height. Plasma cholesterol level was
measured from capillary blood. Data was analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and further
analyzed with post-hoc Man-Whitney analysis.
Results. Kruskal-Wallis analysis showed p-value < 0.05 in relation between BMI
and plasma cholesterol level in children age 9-14 years. Post-hoc Man-Whitney
analysis showed p-value < 0.05 in BMI interclassification correlation between
underweight – obese, normal – obese, and overweight – obese.
Conclusion. There is a strong correlation between BMI and plasma cholesterol level
in children age 9-14 years.
