Needs analysis plays an important role in the process of designing and carrying out an effective and efficient language course. This paper reports the results of the students’ needs analysis for the English course at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sriwijaya University, conducted in the second semester of the academic year 2009/2010. The participants of the study include 378 students, 10 instructors, the faculty’s management, and the head of the university’s language institute. The data were collected through (a) a questionnaire given to the students, (b) interviews with the instructors, the faculty’s management, the language institute head, and (c) observations in the classroom. The results of the questionnaire reveal the students’ strengths and weaknesses in terms of language skills and aspects, their language needs at present and for the future, their learning preferences and difficulties. The results of the interviews depict the expectations of the instructors and the faculty of the English course. This study shows that there is some overlap between the students’ needs and the faculty’s expectations. Both agreed on the importance of reading and speaking skills. This study has provided the university’s language institute as the coordinator of the English course with good information about the students’ needs. The institute could reconsider and redesign the syllabus and instructional materials of the English course to enhance an effective instruction.
