Abstract
Background: BCG immunization is prevention attempt in order to decrease the tuberculosis (TB) mortality rate in in infants and toddlers. In an immunization program report from PMPTM Dinas Kesehatan DKI Jakarta in 2012, especially in North Jakarta, the coverage target has reached 96,2%. However, this number hasn’t reached the immunization coverage target of 100% given by the Universal Child Immunization (UCI). Moreover, failure to immunize babies with the BCG vaccine puts them at risk of developing TB with harsh complications.
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to study the factors linked with the behavior of mothers in regard of the provision of BCG immunization for their babies.
Methods: A cross sectional study is used which involves all mothers with babies ranging from 0 to 24 months of age in Rusunawa, RW 06, Penjaringan, North Jakarta. Data is taken from April to September 2015. Data is collected by interview guided questionnaires that has been initially tested and consists of questions regarding predisposing factors (knowledge, attitude, socio-economics, family support), enabling factors (health facilities where deliveries occur), and reinforcing factors (support from society). Data is then analyzed using a Chi-Square test (p<0.05).
Results: Results show that 58 out of the 63 respondents (92%) have received BCG immunizations, and 5 respondents (5%) haven’t immunized their children. knowledge (P=0.630), attitude (P=0.345), level of education (P=0.789), income (P=0.583), occupation (P=1.00), support from the mothers’ family (P=1.00), and support from the society (P=1,00) have no relationship with the behavior of the mothers. Meanwhile, health facilities where deliveries occur (P=0.04) have a relation with mothers’ behavior in providing BCG immunization for their babies.
Conclusion: Health facilities have an important role in determining the mothers’ behavior in providing BCG immunizations for their babies. The providence of training and education regarding BCG immunizations for healthcare workers is suggested, especially to those who work in private healthcare facilities.
