Abstract
Background : Type 2 Diabetes Melitus (DM) is a metabolic disease with characteristic hyperglycemia caused by abnormal insulin secretion, insulin resistance and both. This Type 2 DM is classified as a chronic disease, in which could alter the illness perception over time. Illness Perception is cognitive and emotional view of the individual in understanding the disease. Illness Perception of one person to another are not necessarily the same; as it could be influenced by many factors, for instance the gender difference. Differences in illness perception of men and women could lead to different treatment outcomes.
Objectives : The aim of the research is to determine illness perception by gender found in patients with type 2 Diabetes Melitus at Poliklinik Pratama Bintang Laut Jakarta.
Methodology : The research is conducted cross sectionally by using Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ) to patients with type 2 DM at Poliklinik Pratama Bintang Laut Jakarta by descriptive technique.
Results : The result shows that personal control, concern and emotional representation found in women are worse compare to men. Perception of consequences in men is worse than women. Perception of treatment control, Identity,
timeline and illness coherece show in different result between men and women.
Conclusions : Illness perception against type 2 DM women is worse than men.
