Assessment is the process of collecting, interpreting, recording and using information of student achievement. The information should be interpreted by comparing with a group or criterion. This article aims to present the methods of assessments commonly use in education, especially medical education. There are two main approaches to assessment: Norm-referenced Assessment and Criterion-referenced Assessment. Norm-referenced Assessment describes the student achievement against their peers in a particular group. In contrast to norm-referenced assessment, a criterion-referenced assessment reports whether the student has achieved on each of the instructional goals or outcomes. There are some differences between these two types of assessments in terms of their intended purpose, selection of the test content, and test interpretation.
