Background: One factor that may caused lack of competencies among midwives in delivering quality family planning and reproductive health services is perhaps the quality of learning process itself. Curriculum and teaching-learning system at schools of midwifery not adequately give knowledge relevant to stakeholders demand. An educational innovation is deemed necessary and should be introduced. Objectives: The study evaluates the effect of PBL method to improve midwifery students knowledge on family planning-reproductive health at schools of midwifery in Central Java and East Java. Method: The study was a quasy experiment designed as Pre-test and Post-test with control group. Samples of the study were 600 students at 10 schools of midwifery in Central Java and East Java. The sample was divided into experimental group (treated with PBL method) and control group (treated with regular/conven¬tional method). Univariable and bivariable analysis was conducted to analyse the results. Result: The mean score of knowledge achievement were improved in both groups. Two schools showed PBL methods fail to improve the knowledge score, even if compared to the conventional group. The two groups showed significant different concerning the achievement score. Among the PBL method groups the score increased significantly (p<0,0 1). The conventional method groups showed lower score improvement, and not significant (p=0,904). Conclusion: The PBL methods significantly improve the knowledge score on reproductive health than those taking conventional methods.
