This paper presents the findings of a study commissioned by the British Council in 2010. According to BAN-PT (National Accreditation Board for Higher Education), there are 160 teacher training institutions in Indonesia which offer accredited first degree (S1) qualifications in English language education (Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris). Of these, exactly a quarter are state institutions whilst three quarters are private. Just 15 (9%) are accredited at A grade. The purpose of the study was to find out more about these programmes, how many students they have, how many English language teachers they produce each year, how many lecturers they have, what qualifications their lecturers possess, how much opportunity they give their students to undertake teaching practice in schools, whether demand for these programmes is rising or falling, and the problems which programmes face in preparing new teachers. A questionnaire was sent to all 160 programme coordinators and responses were received from almost precisely a quarter of them. At the time of preparing this abstract the process of analysing responses is still continuing. However it is clear that, among other aspects, teaching practice opportunities are extremely varied. It is also clear that there is no single national body which provides a voice for all 160 programmes. The paper will present a detailed analysis of findings and propose a number of recommendations for the initial teacher education of English language teachers in Indonesia. (The views expressed in this paper are those of the speaker and are not necessarily shared by the British Council.)
