Abstract
Background. The elderly population will continue to increase with time. When the body function declined one of the problem that were faced by the elderly was a decline in cognitive function and an increased risk of falling. Cognitively impaired elderly people are at twice the risk of falls compared to cognitively intact. One out of every three adults of ages 65 years and older falls each year. In the elderly who have fallen, they could experience mild to severe injuries, and even if they’re not injured, become afraid of falling. This fear may cause a person to cut down on their everyday activities. When a person is less active, they become weaker and this increases their chances of falling
Goal. The aim of the research is to determine the relation of cognitive function with the risk of falls in elderly.
Method. This research was an analytic study, with a design of cross sectional. Thirty eight people were taken by using the consecutive sampling that were carried out in several nursing home located in Jakarta. The cognitive function was assessed using the MMSE (Mini Mental State Examination) questionnaire and for the risk of falls was assessed by the Time Up and Go Test (TUG). The data analysis was using the
coefficient contigency test with P<0.05
Result and Conclusion. The number of women respondents were more than men, with the mean of MMSE was 24.13 and TUG was 24.10 seconds. Respondents with cognitive impairment had risk of falling 3:58 times than respondents with normal cognitive function. Based on the analysis results of SPSS, it was obtained P=0.021 (p<0.05) which showed that the calculation was statistically significant. There is
relation between cognitive function and risk of falls in elderly.
Suggestion. There are several other factors which can affect the cognitive function and risk of falls that should be further investigated. The amount of sampel must be enlarged so that the research result more representative.
