Abstract
Background : Endemic diseases such as filariasis are often found in Indonesia. In Indonesia, Culex sp. is one of its known vectors. Based on the data obtained by the Ministry of Health (MoH) of the Republic of Indonesia in 2010, the number of filariasis cases of in Indonesia had increased by 50% from 2000 to 2009. The synthetic household insecticide mostly contains active pyrethroid ingredients. Excessive application or unintentional consumption of it could lead to undesirable effects such as poisoning or even death. Therefore, there is a need for an environmentally friendly alternative that is effective in eradicating mosquitoes while having no harmful effects to human health, such as clove (Syzygium aromaticum). The component of clove that is thought tobe toxic to Culex sp. mosquitoes in eugenol. Methods : This study used a true experimental design post test only control group and for each test, 10 Culex sp. mosquitoes are required. Result : Based on the effectiveness test results, the clove (S. aromaticum) extracts with concentration of 10%, 20% and 30% had lethal effect to Culex sp.mosquitoes. Meanwhile, the outcome of statistical tests on the effectiveness of clove (S. aromaticum) extracts as a basic ingredient of insecticides against Culex sp. mosquitoes by using Wilcoxon test showed no significant results (p = 0.083). Conclusion : Extracts of clove (S. aromaticum) with 10%, 20% and 30% concentration have lethal effect against the Culex sp. mosquitoes. Extract of clove (S. aromaticum) with 30% concentration has the fastest 100% lethal effect against the Culex sp. mosquitoes. The higher concentration of clove (S. aromaticum) extract, the less span of time needed to cause lethal effect against the Culex sp . mosquitoes.
