Background: Neem is a plant that grows in Asia including in Indonesia. Neem leaves contain quercetin that has antibacterial property. Streptococcus mutans is a bacteria that caused dental caries in human.
Purpose : The purpose of this study is to find out which concentration of acetone neem leaves extract that is the most effective in slowing down the growth of Streptococcus mutans.
Method : This study was an experimental in vitro with disk diffusion method with 15 samples (triploid). Neem leaves powder which was obtained from Bogor Agriculture Institution was extracted for 16 hours with soxhlet apparatus with acetone as solvent. The concentrated neem leaves extract then made into five concentrations which are 6,25%, 12,5%, 25%, 50%, and 100%. S.mutans was obtained from patient with dental caries in Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital which is incubated in 37oC and CO2 5% in Mueller-Hinton agar with 5% sheep blood for 24 hours.
Result : There was no inhibition zone in 6,25% and 12,5% concentration. In 25% concentration, there was 6,67 mm mean inhibition zone. In 50% concentration, there was 9,67 mean inhibition zone. In 100% concentration, there was 11,67 mean inhibition zone.
Conclusion : Acetone neem leaves extract with 100% concentration has weak inhibitory effect againt the growth of S.mutans |
