Abstract
Background. Acinetobacter baumannii is a coccobacillus Gram negative bacteria that have a characteristic like aerob, non-motile, non-capsulated, negative-oxidizing, and positive catalase. This is known as the main pathogen causing nosocomial disease besides Klebsiella pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Infection of A. baumannii can be found in urinary tract infection (UTI), infections of surgical wounds, blood stream infections, ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and immunocompromised patients are treated in intensive care units (ICU). These bacteria often found to be resistant in a wide range of antibiotics and still very few research about this resistance antibiotics, especially in Indonesia .
Objective. To know the effectiveness of carbapenem–colistin combination therapy toward clinical parameter transition (blood leukocyte, sputum leukocyte, C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, body temperature, lactate, and level of survival) of A.baumanii related pneumonia patients.
Methodology. Research was conducted using retrospective cohort methods using medical records of Royal Taruma Hospital patients who underwent treatment between January 2011 until March 2015 using analytical descriptive study.
Result. Carbapenem-colistin combination therapy providing a diverse effect on the clinical parameters patients with pneumonia associated A. baumannii. The results in the study of basophil, eosinophil, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, PCT, and survival rates after treatment showed no significant changes. Whereas in blood leukocytes and body temperature proved to have a positive effect, which has been decreasing after treatment.
Conclusion. Carbapenem–colistin combination therapy has a positive effect on changes in levels of blood leukocytes and decreased the temperature body significantly. Other clinical parameters besides those two does not provide any significant changes in patients with pneumonia associated A. baumannii.
