Background : People often missed and don’t know the functions of breakfast, which is to maintain blood glucose, that’s used as a primary source, especially for the brain, in order to perform its functions properly. This study was conducted to determine the effect of breakfast on short-term memory, which is one of the functions of the brain. Methods : This experimental study conducted on students of the Faculty of Medicine Catholic University of Indonesia Atma Jaya. From 217 students, 46 students who were chosen, divided into different groups. Each will be tested with digit span test before and after treatment in three days. Results was analyzed with Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney test. Results : From 217 students, who are accustomed to eating breakfast 51.7% and weren’t accustomed to eating breakfast 48.4%. Students who weren’t, majority due to lack of time (55.2%). Type of commonly consumed breakfast is bread (45.6%), milk (39.6%), and rice (36.9%). The test results before and after treatment in both groups found a significant difference (p = 0.000), as well as the test results after treatment between the two groups (p = 0.000). Conclusion : Breakfast has been proven affect short-term memory in FKUAJ students positively. |
