Abstract
Background : The number of elderly in Indonesia has been increasing each year. In 2012, the total population of eldery in Indonesia reached the number of 18,55 million. The elderly are vulnerable to numbers of adverse health condition, such as disability. However, early recognition of disability is difficult and tends to be slow and only became noticeable after it reach further stage. One of the factor that are considered directly proportional with disabilities that can be measured is Frailty. This study aims to determine the relationship between Frailty and the characteristics of the elderly towards the occurence of disabilities.
Methods :This is a descriptive analytic study using cross-sectional design. All of the elderly that reside in Kelurahan Penjaringan RW 08 that is willing to participate are the samples.
Result : With One Way Anova test, the P value for the ADL and IADL with Frailty of 0.00 (P <0.05) showed that there were significant differences, followed by post hoc analysis to see the differences between groups. The differences between the total mean of ADL score in the group with non-frail frail is 1.2 with p = 0.01, and the mean difference in value IADL frail and non-frail group was 2.95 with p = 0.01.
Relationship between disability with gender and education level did not show a significant difference (p> 0.05). The relationship between disability by age showed significant differences, both IADL and ADL, with the age group =65 years experience more disability
Conclusion : Gender and level of education is not associated with the occurrence of disability, but more research needs to be done because the distribution of the elderly population was not normal. In contrast, age and Frailty associated with the occurrence of disability. However, it can’t be established whether Frailty that precede disability or otherwise, and therefore for Frailty and disability too also needed further research.
