Abstract
Background
HIV/AIDS is a chronic disease than can be potentially life-threatening. Most people affected by HIV/AIDS are still vulnerable to stigma and discrimination that can significantly affect their quality of life. Self management strategies of this chronic disease can help the patient to maintain their own health in future.
Method
This was a descriptive cross-sectional study to know the description of self-management in people living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome at Dharmais Cancer Hospital, Jakarta. It was done by interviewing them based on questionnaire about self-management from January until July 2015.
Result
Result of this study showed various strategies in managing themselves from HIV/AIDS. Self-management strategies that submitted by respondents, are: adherence to medication or treatment (95,5%), religion as health motivator (90,9%), modified diet (71,2%), and importance of being active/ exercise (48,5%). Most of the respondents do positive things, like talking to family/friends (47%), when they feel anxiety/stress.
Conclusion
People of HIV/AIDS have done various strategies of self-management. The most implemented strategies is continue taking medication. Talking to family or friends is the best method to relieve their anxiety and stress. Lack of knowledge, lack of time, and unwillingness to disclosure HIV/AIDS status are the causes of poor self-management.
