Abstract
Background: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world.
Cardiorespiratory fitness and anthropometric parameter is commonly used to
estimate the risk of developing cardiovascular disease despite of its limitation.
Recent studies has shown that retinal microvascular caliber could be used as a
biomarker to predict cardiovascular disease accurately. However, the relationship
between retinal microvascular caliber, cardiorespiratory fitness and anthropometric
parameter are poorly understood.
Objectives: To determine the association between retinal microvascular caliber,
cardiorespiratory fitness and anthropometric parameters.
Methods: A cross sectional study was done in School of Medicine, Atma Jaya
Catholic University of Indonesia. Samples included in the study was determined by
simple random sampling. Anthropometric measurement and Queen’s College Step
Test was done to calculate several index (ABSI, WHtR) and cardiorespiratory
fitness. Fundus photograph are also taken and are analyzed using VAMPIRE
software to measure the retinal microvascular caliber. Statistic analysis was
performed using SPSS version 15.0.
Results: In this study (n= 38), we found that the mean of CRAE, CRVE and AVR
were 147.39 µm, 245.38 µm and 0.60 respectively. Correlation analysis showed a
moderate negative correlation between waist circumference and WHtR with CRAE
and AVR (p < 0.05), while BMI showed a correlation only with AVR (r = -0.385)
and ABSI showed a correlation only with CRAE (r = -0,370). Further analysis
shown that the mean of CRAE and AVR was significantly smaller samples with
WHtR > 0.5 (CRAE =155,00 µm, AVR = 0,63) compared to the samples which has
WHtR < 0.5(CRAE = 132,77 µm, AVR = 0,56, p < 0,05).
Conclusions: There is an association between retinal microvascular caliber and
anthropometric parameters, therefore could be used as a biomarker of
cardiovascular disease.
