Abstract
Background : Individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) are at risk of experiencing mental emotional disorder such as depression and anxiety, which often being undiagnosed or late detected. Mental emotional disorder in individuals with type 2 DM may cause nonadherence to treatment and medication. Goals : To find out the correlation between depression, anxiety with adherence to treatment and medication. Methods : This cross sectional research was done on 50 type 2 diabetes mellitus outpatiensts in Internal Medicine Clinic of Atma Jaya Hospital in July – August 2015. Instruments used on this research were demographic questionnaire, Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD), Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAM-A), Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8), and treatment adherence questionnaire. Data was analyzed univariately, bivariately, and multivariately using logistic regression. Results : Respondent of this research were 50 individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). There are 36% of respondents with low adherence to medication and 24% with nonadherence to treatment. 70% of respondents have depression, including 38% with mild depression, 22% with moderate depression, 6% with severe depression, and 4% with very severe depression. This research also found 38% of respondents with mild anxiety, 40% with moderate anxiety, and 32% with severe anxiey. The bivariate analysis showed a significant correlation between depression and adherence to medication in individuals with type 2 DM (P < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that individuals with type 2 DM with depression have 5,474 times higher risk of nonadherence to medication compared to those without depression. Conclusion : Depression plays a major role in nonadherence to medication in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
