Abstract
Background. Culex sp. acts as the vector of Lymphatic filariasis, Western encephalitis, and Japanese encephalitis. To reduce the negative effect of chemical pestisides, a safer natural substance is needed to be developed as natural pesticides. Ocimum basilicum L. is chosen because it rich ofmethyl chavicol,eugenol, and flavonoid.
Purpose. To investigate the lethal effectivity of basil leaves extract against Culex sp.
Method. The design of this experiment was true experiment post test only group that were repeated two times. There are 4 groups consist of control(aquadest) and 3 dosages of ethanol extract of basil with concentration of 20%, 25%, and 30%. In every experiment, 10 Culex sp. were exposed with the vapour of extract and was observed every 30 minutes.
Result.Clinically, all three dosage of basil extract could kill the mosquito in less than 3 hours. Statistically, there is a significant difference between the lethal effect before and after experiment.
Conclusion.From observation, higher the dosage of basil extract, less time needed to kill Culex sp.
