Abstract
Background. Candidiasis is a fungal infection of the human disease caused by species of Candida albicans. Red betel leaf is known as one of the herbs that has many benefits, contains alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins of red betel leaf is thought to have antifungal power.
Objectives. Knowing the effectiveness of antifungal extract of Piper betle L.Var. rubrum leaf against C. albicans in vitro.
Methodology. This study used laboratory experimental design. The subjects were 95% ethanol extract of red betel leaf. Extract with a concentration of 7.5%, 10%, and 12.5% were tested against C. albicans using the disc diffusion method. On Mueller-Hinton Agar (MHA) applied to culture fungi that have been standardized to 5.0 McFarland. Whatman filter paper disc-shaped, 6 mm in diameter which has been given various concentrations of ethanol extract of red betel leaves, sterile distilled water as a negative control, and ketoconazole as a positive control is placed on the
MHA. Incubated at 37°C for 1-3 days and then measured the diameter of inhibition zone diameter. This research data was statistically analyzed using non-parametric test of Kruskal Wallis.
Result. ethanol extract of red betel leaf has antifungal activity against C. albicans at
a concentration of 7.5%, 10% and 12.5% respectively with 14 mm, 8 mm, and 8 mm
inhibition zone diameter. Concentration of 7.5% was the most effective
concentration. Ketoconazole 2% has the highest effectiveness among all the
concentration of the extract.
Conclution. The 95% ethanol extract of red betel leaves contain alkaloids,
flavonoids, and tannins. The concentration of 7.5%, 10%, and 12.5% extract have
antifungal activity that inhibit the growth of C. albicans in vitro.
