Isi artikelBackground: Pain is the most frequent chief complaint encountered by osteoarthritis (OA) patients. Recently, it was claimed macrophage activation products (IL-1, TNF-a), expression of human leukocyte antigen class II (HLA) molecules on the surface of chondrocytes, and decreased collagen synthesis are factors that contribute to the pathogenesis of OA. All these may be attributed to the action of interferon-?(IFN-?). ObJective: Objective of this study is to analyze the correlation between pain score by Visual Analog Scale (VAS) with IFN-a levels secreted by lymphocyte synovial fluid in knee OA patients. Methods: This is a cross sectional study which involves patients who are knee OA patients from outpatients internal medicine department at Dr. Sardjito Hospital and Wirosaban Hospital Yogyakarta based on the ACR 1986 criteria. Subject who fulfill eligibility criteria are underwent synovial fluid examination for IFN-? levels secreted by lymphocyte in synovial fluid and they write pain intensity in VAS. Level of IFN-? secreted by lymphocyte cells is measured by ELISA. Pearson or Spearman correlation test is performed to analyze the correlation between pain score by VAS with IFN-? levels in lymphocyte synovial fluid. The significant level is p<0.05. Result and Conclusion: There are 67 subjects consist of 22 (32.8%) males and 45 (67.2 %) females. Mean (± SD) of pain intensity VAS is 51.14 ± 24.04 and mean (± SO) of IFN-? level is 77.45 ± 57.53 pg/ml. The coeficient correlation (r) between pain score by VAS and IFN-? level is -0.05 (p=0.66). The conclusion of this study is that there is no association between pain score with IFN-? secreted by lymphocyte synovial fluid levels in knee OA patients.
