Methods: This prospective observational study is done in Dr. Sardjito Hospital, Yogyakarta, and Mitra Masyarakat Hospital, Timika from November 2008 - December 2008. Data are analyzed and present in diagrams and table for qualitative analysis, and Spearman's correlation with confident interval 95%, and kappa analysis for qualitative analysis. The sample of this study consists of 47 patients, 30 patients from Mitra Masyarakat Hospital, Timika, and 17 patients from Dr.Sardjito Hospital, Yogyakarta. Conventional method by staining thick and thin blood smears with giemsa and then examinated it with light microscope is used to examine blood samples. Results and Conclusion: This study has kappa value 1 for plasmodium in blood sample, and kappa value 0.83 for species plasmodium. Significant correlation that found in this study is: Plasmodium falciparum with fever (r = 0.352; P = 0.015), total parasite with vomit (r = 0.302; p=0.039), spasm (r = 0.432; p=0.002) and unconcious (r = 0.342; p=0.019). Therefore, it could be concluded that thick and thin blood film must be made in order to diagnose malaria disease. Parasitemia has significant correlation with clinical symptomps (fever, vomit, spasm and unconcious) in malaria's patients.
