Isi artikel
Neonatal sepsis is a condition in which blood has been contaminated with bacterial agents in newborn baby. Neonatal sepsis has a high morbidity and mortality. The signs and symptoms of neonatal sepsis are caused by systemic response and are not typical. There are many additional examinations to confirm the diagnosis of neonatal sepsis including procalcitonin (PCT). Procalcitonin has been used more frequent as routine laboratory examination for neonatal sepsis recently. In many experiments, PCT has been approved more superior than C-reactive protein (CRP), leucocyte count, and neutrophyl immature ratio for neonatal sepsis, especially in early onset of neonatal sepsis. The sensitivity of procalcitonin in diagnosing neonatal sepsis ranges from 61% to 100%, and the specificity ranges from 50% to 97%. The cut-off point of procalcitonin is different, depends on the age of the newborn baby and onset of the sepsis.
