Introduction: The effect of pelvic floor muscle exercise (PFME) on the second stage of the delivery was less obvious. This study was conducted to confirm whether the duration of the second stage of the delivery in primigravid who performed PFME was shorter than they did not. Methods: A retrospective study using data from patient's medical delivery reports delivering in Saint Carolus Hospital from January to October 2009. Subjects were primigravid aged 20-35 years, divided into training group and control group. Unpaired t test, Pearson correlation, Chi-square or Fisher test was used to examine the duration of the second stage between groups, relationship between influencing factors and duration of the second stage, and relationship between PFME and prolonged labor, older mother's age, and heavier baby's weight. Results: Two hundred and eighty eight (144 PFME group, 144 control) according to the criteria was obtained. PFME group had younger age (26,3 yo vs 28,5 yo, P<0,05), lighter baby weight (3069,5 gr vs 3183,5 gr, P<0,05), and shorter duration of the second stage (27,8 min vs 51,6 min, P< 0, 05). Duration of the second stage was correlated with PFME and mother's age (P<0,05) but not with baby's weight (P>0,05). Odds ratio (OR) of the control group to prolonged labor was 2,0 (CI;1,8-2,3). Conclusion: Primigravid who performed PFME have shorter duration of the second stage of the delivery. Primigravid who did not perform PFME were twice as likely to have prolonged labor.
