Abstract
The primary focus of this study was to investigate code switching produced by primary one teachers at Sekolah Cikal Cilandak. This study attempted to study the types and the functions of code switching by primary teachers in bilingual school and focused on code switching produced by primary one teachers.
This study aimed to explore a circumstance in which code switching occurs during the teaching process. The data of this study was taken by recording the teaching process. The data of this study was taken by recording the teaching process. The respondents of this study were nine first grader teachers who teach in Sekolah Cikal Cilandak, Jakarta. Each participant was recorded once during the teaching process. Each meeting consisted of thirty-five to forty-five minutes recording. There were nine meetings recorded as there were nine participants in this study. Then, all data was analyzed using theories by Poplack (1980), Canagarajah (1995) and Guthrie (1984).
This study found out that the three types of code switching, namely intrasentential code swtiching, inter-sentential code switching and tag-switching, were all produced by nine primary one teachers in four bilingual classes at Sekolah Cikal. The type of code switching which was produced the most is intra-sentential code switching with 51%, inter-sentential code switching with 43% of total and tag-switching based on Canagarajah’s (1995) and Guthrie;s (1984) categorization were also all produced. Moreover, primary one teachers in Sekolah Cikal code switch mostly in a situation with regard to content transmission rather than in a situation which was related to classroom management.
