Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance become worldwide problem including in Indonesia Carbapenems are the last choice of antimicrobial treatment particularly for multidrug-resistant bacteria The worldwide emergence of carbapenem resistant strains had been reported. This study was' carried out to describe prevalence of carbapenems resistance among Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria from clinical specimens during January 2013 until September 2014 in Atma Jaya Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia Carbapenems included! in this study were meropenem and imipenem. Total amounts of bacterial isolates were 385, divided into 194 Gram positive and 191 Gram negative bacteria The numbers of Gram positive bacteria resistant to meropenem and imipenem were 44.5% and 34.5%. The numbers of Gram negative bacteria resistant to meropenem and imipenem were 23.6% and 30.6%. Activity of meropenem against Gram negative bacteria is greater than that of imipenem, whereas activity of imipenem against Gram positive bacteria is greater than that of meropenem.
