Abstract
Background: Typhoid fever is an important public health problem in developing countries. Prevalence rate of typhoid fever in Indonesia estimated 358-810/100.000. The mortality rate due to typhoid infection in Indonesia and New Guinea are reported to be higher than in countries in Southeast Asia. Salmonella Typhi is transmitted through food or water contaminated with faeces. Asymptomatic food handlers carrier who is working in supply and distribution of the food-stuffs can transfer Salmonella Typhi to their customers. The objectives of this study were detection S. Typhi carriers among food handlers in Atmajaya Hospital Jakarta and detection of antibiotic resistance of isolates.
Methods: In this study 26 subjects working as the food handlers in the Atma Jaya Hospital were investigated. Fecal samples from food handlers were collected, enriched and cultured on suitable media, Selenith F broth and Hectoen Enteric Agar. Isolat were identified with Microbact 12A and 12B, antibiotic resistance test done by disc diffusion methods.
Result: Among 26 stools culture, we found three samples were positive for Salmonella none S. Typhi. All Salmonella isolates were sensitive to antibiotics except for ampicillin, however two of isolates were resistant consisting of Salmonella pullorum and Salmonella enterka subspecies IV.
Conclusion: Acording to Indonesian government regulation, all foodhandler that work at the hospital kitchen to prepare food, should be carrier Salmonella Typhi free. In this research we found that all the subjects were Salmonella Typhi carrier free.
