Isi artikelBackgrounds: Individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS) is found to have a higher risk for cardiovascular diseases. In addition to various traditional risk factors such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia, they also show a severe proinfiammation fac¬tor. The study evaluates correlation between PAI-1 and meta¬bolic syndrome component. Methods: Subjects are those without diabetes mellitus and any cardio¬vascular disease, and those administered with lipid-lowering or anti-aggregation drugs. All participants were subjected to thor¬ough physical examinations. After 12h fasting, the blood was sampled for further plasma glucose examination, lipid profile, and PAI-1 level. Metabolic syndrome uses AHA/NHLBI criterion. Results: A number of 183 subjects were considered eligible, consist¬ing of 76 subjects as MetS and 108 subjects as non-MetS. In¬dividuals with MetS have a significantly higher PAI-1 level in comparison with non-MetS, i.e. 18.01 ±9.33 and 4.33±4.83 mlU/ ml (p=0.001). There is a significant correlation between fast¬ing plasma-glucose, triglyceride, HDL-C, waist circumference, blood pressure and PAI-1 level (p<0.05; r = 0.693). Using PAI-1 > 7IU/ml as high criterion, a high triglyceride level represents 25.5 times for high PAI-1 level risk, whereas waist circumference, low HDL-cholesterol, high level plasma glucose, and hypertension account for 2.69 times in comparison-With non-MetS. Conclusions: Those with MetS reported a higher level of PAI-1 in comparison with non-MetS. The whole components of MetS is in correlation with PAI-1 level increasing, especially a high level of triglycer¬ide. This brings about effects on a higher risk of cardiovascular individual with MetS.
