Isi artikelIn 2002, Jill Hills published The Struggle for Control of Global Communication, in which she demonstrated the importance of a historical dimension in our understanding of global communications structures and international power relations. In tracing the internationalization of communications from the telegraph onwards, she showed the ascendancy of private corporate interests over national sovereignties during the period of ‘high’ imperialism and revealed how developments a hundred years ago remain pertinent today. Hills identified the telegraph as the technological form that brought about the initial paradigm shift from national to transnational communications, overhauled transportation as the key force in international power relations and began the transfiguration of the spatial and temporal dimensions of communications and culture that we have been negotiating ever since.
