Isi artikelIn an age of overloaded email inboxes and ‘wi-fi’ hotspots, cheap, almost instant global communications may be taken for granted, at least by those in the West. Dwayne R. Winseck and Robert M. Pike take us back to a time when the notion of sending messages around the world at speed was still groundbreaking, and most certainly beyond the reach of the masses. They argue convincingly for the importance of studying this neglected early history of global media systems in order to understand the complex interconnections between imperialism, globalization and communication technologies. As they suggest in their introduction, too often it is a ‘caricatured version’ of this past as a period of conflict between imperial powers that dominates the current literature.
