Isi artikelIn the last quarter century, there has been an unmistakeable turn towards memory in both popular culture and academic theory and research. History and Memory aims to survey and assess this concern for memory from a historian’s perspective, and address the key concerns that historians may have in relation to memory. This may suggest that the appeal of the book is limited to historians, as the conceptualization of memory is not situated in the embryonic but interdisciplinary field of ‘memory studies’. However, Cubitt’s attention to a broad spectrum of research on memory and the critical approach he takes to traditional history’s treatment of it provides a robust defence against any accusations of a limited or rigid disciplinary perspective. In addition, those concerned with the development of a comprehensive and contextualized study of memory should, at some level, be concerned with the relationship between memory and history and will therefore find the book a valuable resource for positioning memory in relation to other modalities of engaging with the past.
