Isi artikel
Censoring the Word is a slim book that aims to interrogate the contemporary meaning and relevance of notions of freedom of expression and its associated concepts. Petley’s essay forms part of the Seagull series ‘Manifestos for the 21st Century’ and is created in collaboration with the journal Index on Censorship. It aims to explore arguments in defence of freedom of expression, situate them in a historical context and provide a critical assessment of their value in contemporary communicative life. This exploration is very timely as, while routinely invoked and often taken for granted as a social and cultural good, freedom of expression at the beginning of the new millennium requires interrogation to re-establish its meaning, justification and implications.
