Isi artikelThis edited collection, focused mainly on the role of the news media in the making of the Rwandan genocide, is a welcome addition to the rapidly growing corpus of scholarly books on what many regard as the most horrific event in Africa’s history. In the first decade or so after the genocide, publications on the subject were dominated by general histories and journalistic accounts; understandably so. More recently, books spotlighting particular aspects or concentrating on specific themes relating to this mass killing are becoming more common. Because the mass media played such an important part in the shaping of the genocide and in framing responses to it, both the academic and the teacher in me are pleased at the opportunity of being able to add a wide-ranging compilation of essays on this specialized topic to my bookshelf.
