Isi artikelWhat caused this apparent dereliction in the American press? Are the media really responsible for the Iraq debacle? A slew of books by insiders and critics have attempted to assess the role of the press in the Iraq fiasco and to assign blame, of which there is plenty to go around. The books examined here offer copious, and often overlapping, evidence of the American media’s shortcomings, but distinctions emerge in explaining the primary sources of the failure. Some point to the Bush administration’s successful attempt to manipulate the press, while others look at various illnesses within the media itself, be it corporate ownership, conservative bias or the political economy of news production. As with most complex issues, there are multiple explanations for the media’s failure. However, if we are to learn lessons for the future, we need to look not simply at the particular dynamics at play in Iraq, but at two critical issues: American journalism’s limited approach to what constitutes legitimate sources of news and how the operation of American political institutions shapes media content.
