Anyone familiar with radio history in Britain will be aware of Radio Luxembourg and Radio Normandie, which are usually cited as the only competition facing the BBC in its early years. They may know why their broadcasts were made from abroad and accept, along with the conventional accounts, that they had little impact on the BBC in its legal monopoly over broadcasting in Britain. They may not know much beyond this because the conventional accounts do not offer much detail about the broadcasts or how these overseas stations were organized and run. This reinforces the sense that the pre-war landscape of British broadcasting was created by the BBC.
