Isi artikelThe four books under review form a tiny part of the thriving and profitable global industry that is the Bardbiz, encompassing the theatre, tourism, education, publishing and media industries among others. This Shakespeare industry has proved fertilely adaptable, extending itself into each new medium that arises, from the magic lantern to the Internet, seeking new audiences and new profit points and maintaining the author’s cultural centrality and respectability. Academics have commented on, criticized and deconstructed the Bardbiz, but by these very activities ultimately sustain it, as attested to by the number of books concerning Shakespeare’s presence on screens small and large. These screening Shakespeare books have increased exponentially in number since the beginning of the 21st century; my quick and unsystematic search of Amazon UK revealed approximately 40 titles on the topic (not counting screenplays) published since the year 2000. More are undoubtedly in preparation even as I write.
