Abstract
GRFP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) roof is made from thermoset polyester plastic material reinforced by glass fiber which is designed so it have equal function as metal roof. In this final project the characterization and testing for the material that used in GRFP roof is done in tropical weather in Tangerang. Observation time is determined for 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 month, and 8 years. Degradation is observed from physical, mechanical, and chemical view. Physical characteristic consist of colour differences with stereo microscope and surface roughness test, chemical characteristic is consist of FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra Red) test while mechanical characteristic consist of tensile strength test, and hardness test. General conclusion is that roofing material is subject to degradation as the results of the physical characteristics, chemical characteristics, and mechanical characteristics that has been exposed to the weather for 12 months and 8 years old. Degradation physical characteristic is shown by the color change and the increase of surface roughness, chemical characteristics indicated by the percentage increase in transmittance which is the mechanism of degradation, and mechanical characteristic shown by the increase of the barcol hardness.
