Something rather strange has happened to the critical discourse around ‘quality’ television, as in recent years attention has been focused on US television drama genres. This is a reversal of received wisdom about the value of the national product and lends irony to the general self-declared belief that Britain has the best television in the world. The US programming under critical scrutiny began to appear on television screens across the globe as early as 1981 with Hill Street Blues (Fox 1981–7) and has a lineage through thirtysomething (ABC 1987–91) NYPD Blue (ABC 1993–2005), Law & Order (NBC 1990–) and ER (NBC 1994–), all produced by the major networks.
