While the idea of acquiring a language through television is mostly intangible, this study seeks to investigate whether incidental vocabulary acquisition of Indonesian adults through viewing television program can be virified. During the experiment, 17 participants were asked to watch a 10-episode of English (American) television program with Indonesian subtitle for two consecutive weeks-before and after which they were asked to do a vocabulary test. The initial findings which calculated the two tests using statistical data analysis brought about significant indication of participants’ vocabulary gain. However, a closer examination on each lexical item indicates that the significance on whether certain factors support or either impede acquisition vary depending on different variables such as that of the part of speech, length of word, polysemy, frequency, as well as the availability of contextual cues. When scrutinized further, these variables do not provide clear conclusion whether or not the acquisition of lexical item ensue due to such factors. In other words, the influencing factors that were elaborated in this study do not immediately support incidental L2 vocabulary acquisition. |
