Isi artikelWithin their current status as a critical literature in mainstream media studies, alternative media are a conceptually uneven domain. Previous work in this field has offered a competing range of concepts with which to pin down what exactly is ‘alternative’ about alternative media and this is a subtext of Understanding Alternative Media. The plethora of ‘alternatives’ to mainstream media in this book – both historical and otherwise – offers an attractive invitation for an introductory text summarizing the key debates within the relevant literature, both within and beyond alternative media. Both Atton (2002) and Downing (2001) have previously offered timely, convincing and critical accounts of the conceptual terrain of European and US alternative media, yet a global approach that takes into account recent changes in digital media technologies has only been marginally covered to date.
