Abstract
Introduction: The prevalence of elderly people, specifically elderly women keeps on increasing. Along with the increase of life expectancy, elderly women become more burdened by many diseases, among which is dementia. In theory, Clock-Drawing Test (CDT) is a dementia screening test which is practical, fast and theoritically good in elderly women population. However, until now, there is not enough research between Clock-Drawing Test and its relation in detecting dementia on elderly women in Indonesia.
Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of Clock-Drawing Test on elderly women population in Indonesia.
Methods: This research was conducted with an analytic retrospective method using data gathered from September 2014 to November 2014 with female subjects aged 60 years old or above. Impaired cognitive function was assessed with both Clock-Drawing Test and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE).
Results:76 women participated in this research. (1) From the 76 subjects, 48 (63%) were detected with dementia using the CDT, and 12 (15,8%) using MMSE. (2) A significant relationship was found between gender and CDT results. (3) A high sensitivity and negative predictive value are found using CDT (92% and 96%), while specificity and positive predictive value are not satisfyingly high (42% and 23%).
Conclusion: While sensitivity and NPV of the CDT is high, specificity and PPV are not. Therefore further tests are always necessary and recommended when diagnosing a suspect dementia using CDT.
