Abstract
Primary dysmenorrhea is the most commonly reported gynecologic symptom that happen during menstrual period. In a study among 12-17 years old women, it is reported that dysmenorrhea had a prevalence of 59,7%. Dysmenorrhea is responsible for significant absenteeism from work, and it is the most common reason for school absence among adolescents. NSAIDs are the common therapy that used for treating patients with primary dysmenorrhea. Unfortunately, useof NSAIDs may cause unwanted side effectsAccording to some research fish oil can be used to reduce pain intensity in primary dysmenorrhea. The purpose of this review is to know about the mechanism and effectiveness of fish in in reducing the symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea and the comparison with NSAIDs. The method that is used to write this review is using online journals search within the past 5 years. As a result, fish oil contains omega-3 that have an anti-inflammatory effect that can be used to reduce pain intensity in primary dysmenorrhea. Fish oil is effective to lower the intensity of abdominal pain and low back pain in primary dysmenorrhea (p<0,0001;p<0,003). Although the effectiveness of fish oil in reducing pain intensity is lower compared to ibuprofen effectiveness, fish oil can be used to reduce the pain intensity in primary dysmenorrhea. As a conclusion, fish oil can be used to reduce the symptom of primary dysmenorrhea.
