Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease caused by insufficient secretion of insulin or target tissue insulin resistance. This disease is marked by hyperglycemia. Nowdays, diabetes mellitus is one of 10 leading causes of death in the world. Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is a vegetable that has many medicinal properties. One of okra’s benefits is antidiabetic activity. The result from this literature study shows that okra contains two flavonol glycosides that inhibit a-glucosidase. Viscous Soluble Dietary Fibers (VSDF) of okra is responsible for lowering intestinal glucose absorption. The other mechanisms of action are inhibition of a-amylase and increasing tissues sensitivity to insulin. Results from many studies show okra extracts decrease blood glucose. This literature study provides information about okra’s potential as treatment to diabetes mellitus.
