Abstract
Background: In 2010, Indonesia was one of the top five countries with the highest number of Tuberculosis (TB) cases. One of the causes responsible for the high number of TB cases is the lack of knowledge about TB.The role of Health Institution for promoting TB awareness should be done. People who lack knowledge about TB cannot protect themselves from getting infection
Objective: To asses the knowledge level of the respondents regarding TB and Klinik Paru PPTI Muara Angke in North Jakarta.
Methods: The cross sectional study was implemented through data collections that have been conducted between March 2014 and July 2014 in five RT in RW 20 flat Muara Angke. Knowledge regarding TB and Klinik Paru PPTI were measured by questionnaire. Having a score above and equal to eight out of ten is categorized into having a good level of knowledge, therefore score below eight would determine an insufficient knowledge. Additionally, an in-depth interview with 5 respondents was performed to measure their knowledge of TB.
Results: Out of 214 respondents, the majority (84.1%) of people have poor knowledge of TB, especially regarding the cause, signs and symptoms, aa well as prevention for TB. Most of the respondents (87.9%) were aware about the presence of Klinik Paru PPTI but very few (1.9%) of them knew that the clinic provides promotion activity.
Conclusion: The level of knowledge regarding TB was low, therefore TB education and promotion by health institution should be more encouraged.
