Abstract
Background: Iron is a mineral that has many benefits in the body. Many reactions in the body need iron to work which is why iron deficiency may provide a variety of negative effects to the body. Iron deficiency can be caused by many things such as poor intake or increased iron requirements. Newborns are advised to consume breast milk exclusively, without any additional food and drink. However, iron in the milk itself is not enough to meet the requirement of baby’s iron. This causes the baby prone to iron deficiency which can interfere with the development and growth of the baby.

Objective: To find out the effect of exclusive breastfeeding towards incidence of iron deficiency in infants.

Conclusion: Exclusive breastfeeding for more than 4 months without iron supplementation increase the risk of iron deficiency in infants. This is exacerbated in premature infants or infants with low birth weight.

Suggestion: Infants who are exclusively breastfed should receive iron supplements since 4 months and starts earlier in preterm infants or low birth weight.
