Abstract
Introduction: Several studies about the relationship between sex and pain perception show that women in general have lower pain threshold and tolerance than men . However, there is still controversy on the results due to factors that can affect the outcome of the study. Therefore , we held a research on difference in cold pain threshold and tolerance between male and female students.
Objective: To determine the difference in cold pain threshold and tolerance between male and female students.
Methods: This is a cross sectional analytic study to examine the relationship between sex , pain threshold , and pain tolerance . Research carried out by using cold water 10 ± 1oC and measurements performed by recording the time threshold and pain tolerance shown by using the stopwatch in seconds . The results were tested by independent sample T - test.
Results: Subjects consisted of 90 men and 90 women (18-22 years old). Men have a higher average time in threshold (37.97 ± 17.253 vs 23.60 ± 8.989; P<0,05) , and have a longer average time of tolerance than women (95.06 ± 63.178 vs 56.90 ± 34.393; P<0,05). It also shows that men have a higher time difference between threshold and tolerance than women (58.09 ± 57.172 vs 32.192 ± 33.18; P<0,05) .
Conclusion: There are differences in cold pain threshold and tolerance between men and women . Men have a higher pain threshold and pain tolerance than women.
