Abstract
Background. One of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) declared by United Nations is to decrease Infant Mortality Rate (IMR). Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months is one of the effective methods. Indonesia government regulates maternity leaves for 3 months, which does not support exclusive breastfeeding. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of the regulation and strategies that the worker did to support exclusive breastfeeding.
Methodology. Design of the study was descriptive analytic cross sectional. 88 female workers with 6-24 months old child were recruited by purposive sampling. Interview were conducted using questionnaire on demography, breastfeeding’s method, workplace regulation, and the illness frequencies of the youngest child in their first year. Significance were analyzed by using Chi-Square Test.
Result. Seventy eight percent children were less frequently ill in their first year and 73,9% workers use combination technique to breastfeed. 80% of respondents who breastfed more than 6 months and 77,8% of respondents with good knowledge had their children less frequently ill. However, there is no significant statistical difference. Pumping their milk in workplace is the strategies of the female workers to overcome this issue, but not all employer provide the needed dedicated room.
Conclusion. The workers with good knowledge on breastfeeding and breastfed>6 months, had their child less frequently ill in the first year. Female workers overcome the restricted regulation by pumping their milk in the workplace.
